Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a scarlet tower with buff base, and issuing from behind the battlements a white roundel bearing a blue five-pointed star, the whole enclosed by a black scroll inscribed with the motto "FOUNDATION FOR SUPPORT" in gold letters.

Symbolism
The scarlet tower symbolizes the support mission of the Group and the buff base represents the foundations referred to in the unit's motto.  Montgomery, Alabama, home of the unit, and the State Capitol, represented by the blue star and the white roundel recalls the cotton industry for which the state is famous.  The rich black soil belt of Alabama, where Montgomery is located, is suggested by the scroll.  Scarlet and buff are traditionally associated with the Support branch; scarlet and white refer to the state flag and blue represents the importance of waterways in the early history of Montgomery.  Gold stands for strength and excellence.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 5 September 1985.
